Adult Outpatient Programs Serving the Silicon Valley Area

Every person’s journey to recovery is different, which is why we offer various levels of outpatient programming for adults. Available at two locations (Santa Cruz location opening December 2021), our outpatient services help adults build a strong foundation for long-term recovery.

Interventions That Reflect Your Unique Treatment Journey

At San Jose Behavioral Health Hospital, we are committed to helping adults age 18 and older of all genders meet and exceed their treatment goals. Our hospital specializes in providing the continuity of care and evidence-based behavioral health interventions that reflect the unique healing journey of each person in our care.

Our staff includes multilingual and multicultural counselors and therapists who excel in attending to the unique cultural identity of each person who engages in our programming, which spans a wide spectrum of services.

Upon admission, we thoroughly assess each patient to determine the level of care that will yield the best outcomes for them. Based on that information, we create a personalized treatment plan that they follow throughout their time with us.

Flexible Outpatient Options

For patients whose needs do not necessitate the structured, acute level of care that is inherent in residential or inpatient programming, we provide two more flexible programming options.

The partial hospitalization program (PHP) and the intensive outpatient program (IOP) are designed for patients who are either stepping down from a higher level of support or whose recovery needs cannot be served by traditional outpatient services.

While similar, some of the details of these two programs at San Jose Behavioral Health are described below. The information provided can help you decide if one of these programs may be the ideal choice for yourself or a loved one.

To make our outpatient programming as accessible to our patients as possible, we offer these services at two different locations: San Jose Behavioral Health Hospital in San Jose, California, and Connections – Santa Cruz, opening in December 2021 in Santa Cruz, California.

Who Can Attend PHP & IOP?

Our PHP and IOP serve adults age 18 and older, with programming held in a setting separate from our adolescent patients so that patients can participate with peers of similar age. This can sometimes make patients feel more comfortable with the therapeutic process.

We provide care in these programs for adults who have a primary mental health diagnosis, including:

  • Major depressive disorder
  • Anxiety disorders
  • Bipolar disorder
  • Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
  • Schizophrenia
  • Schizoaffective disorder

We also support adults who have a secondary substance use disorder diagnosis, also known as a co-occurring addiction.

What Types of Services Are Provided Within PHP & IOP?

Depending on each person’s individual needs, they may take part in individual, group, family, and experiential therapies. The choice of interventions is decided on by the members of the multidisciplinary treatment team, who may use techniques such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR), and motivational interviewing.

The group therapy setting offers each person the opportunity to give and receive support, while individual counseling is an ideal environment to privately process the trials and successes of treatment in a one-on-one, confidential space. Family therapy can provide patients and families with a safe setting to resolve concerns and work toward healing the family unit through healthy communication and coping techniques.

For those who need medical services, San Jose Behavioral Health provides on-site medical care and medication management for patients whose treatment plan includes the use of pharmaceutical interventions. These supports ensure that each person’s physical and mental health is consistently monitored throughout their time in our PHP or IOP so that medication adjustments can be made in a timely fashion when necessary.

Outpatient Services at Connections

Located less than an hour southwest of San Jose Behavioral Health Hospital, Connections – Santa Cruz offers the same personalized, comprehensive outpatient services as at our main hospital campus.

We recognize how important it is to have access to behavioral health services near you. Adults in Santa Cruz County and the surrounding communities have the option to take part in our PHP and IOP at our outpatient clinic located closer to their homes.

At Connections – Santa Cruz, a comfortable setting with furnished armchairs and love seats creates a warm environment to start your healing process. We provide lunch on-site and can arrange transportation for those who need assistance getting to and from our outpatient clinic.

What Is a Typical Day Like in PHP & IOP?

A typical schedule for the adult IOP and PHP begins at 9 a.m. and ends between 12:30 p.m. and 3 p.m. depending on the level of care. Mornings include a daily check-in with questionnaires and group processing, along with cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) group, followed by lunch.

In the afternoon, patients participate in a healthy routine goal review or individual therapy, and then close the day with a mindfulness activity or yoga. We even welcome emotional support animals to accompany patients whose treatment experience can be enhanced by their certified four-legged companions.

Our PHP typically lasts for two to five weeks, while our IOP usually has a longer duration, with an average length of eight weeks. Throughout both of these programs, aftercare planning is prioritized so that each patient leaves treatment with a plan for continued success in recovery. These plans are written by our program director and designed to help patients connect with the services in their communities that will support them after leaving our care.

The doctors really cared and took the time to listen to me. I felt really good being heard and having a say in my treatment.
