Adult Partial Hospitalization Program Serving the Silicon Valley Area

Finding the right level of care is an essential part of healing from the effects of a mental health condition. At San Jose Behavioral Health Hospital, our partial hospitalization program (PHP) is among the outpatient options we offer for adults who are struggling with various mental health challenges.

Introduction to the PHP

The partial hospitalization program at San Jose Behavioral Health Hospital provides a more acute level of care than an intensive outpatient program (IOP) or traditional outpatient therapy, offering services for several hours each weekday. However, adults who participate in our PHP can still go home or to another place of residence in the evenings and on weekends, allowing them to start to transition back to their daily lives.

The PHP at our hospital in San Jose, California, offers care for six hours a day, five days a week, and most patients stay in our PHP for two to five weeks depending on their specific recovery needs. Like with all services offered at San Jose Behavioral Health Hospital, you will receive personalized programming based on a thorough health assessment that determines the services and interventions you might find most beneficial.

Some adults step down to the PHP after transitioning out of an inpatient or residential program. However, many adults enter care directly at the PHP level or step up from a traditional outpatient setting. Our expert team will help you determine the level of care that is most appropriate for your current needs.

Program Features

When you choose to heal from a mental health challenge at San Jose Behavioral Health Hospital, you will receive individualized care in a supportive, positive environment. Before you enter the PHP at our San Jose, California, hospital, our experienced staff will conduct an assessment to identify your unique needs and goals so that they can create your personalized care plan.

During your time in our PHP, you will participate primarily in group therapy as your main method of care. Group therapy sessions will focus on helping you build the skills you need to improve daily functioning and well-being, but the therapists and social workers who lead group sessions will also individualize discussions to meet your specific recovery needs.

There are many benefits to participating in group therapy, including opportunities to hear diverse perspectives, exchange support with others, and learn more about the mental health challenge you are struggling with. You will also have the chance to share your own experiences with others in a safe and supportive environment and learn that you are not alone in your battle with a mental health disorder.

Depending on your specific recovery needs, other services you may benefit from during your time in our PHP include:

  • Experiential therapy
  • Medication management
  • Individual therapy

We offer experiential therapies throughout the week during group therapy sessions, including mindfulness, art, music, and guided imagery. Therapists and social workers conduct individual therapy sessions weekly, while family therapy sessions are scheduled according to each family’s needs.

If you need basic medical care, you will meet with nursing staff weekly during your time in our PHP. You will also have the opportunity to meet with a psychiatrist weekly and have regular visits from nursing staff if you need medication management.
